First of all, I read this book because it was tagged as horror/gothic. I thought I was going to read something like Mexican Gothic. But Mexican Gothic had a proper plot and sensible characters unlike this book where every character seemed to be on narcotics.
The book is written beautifully but I was so confused. Is the other world real? Is everyone actually seeing visions? Is the house haunted by something? or has someone mixed something in the water so that everyone is hallucinating…
It should be marked as fantasy. Also indigo was paranoid. As a child she needed therapy which her guardian never acknowledged even when she was smearing herself with glitter and calling a brook under a willow tree otherworld and eating apples and plums dipped in honey at the age of 18 instead of eating chocolates and watching movies and socializing like other teenagers. She was delusional and psychotic. She ruined Azure’s life.
I’m probably not getting the point of this book. But I just ran out of patience.
Also plot holes!!!!!!! What happened on the night tati lost her eyesight? How did tati lose her eyesight? What did she see??? A basilisk? Medusa? How did no one recognize Azure after the incident? Did Tati die that night? Did anyone tell her what happened to Azure?? Did Azure’s mother ever check on her? What is actually the story of the narrator’s brother???? So many plot holes.
It was a cliché classic gothic with two identical sisters and a mysterious house which is astonishingly not on fire by the end of the book. Huh.
2/10. Would not recommend.
