Brooklyn 99 is an 8 season American sitcom which has ironically defied the norm genres of comedy.
Featuring Jake Peralta, an amazing detective/genius who is one of the finest of his squad yet quite immature and reckless, the pilot episode shows the turn of events when Captain Raymond Holt who is a strict and rigid officer gets appointed at the 99th precinct. The eccentric squad and the austere captain makes the show a perfect combo of hilarious yet relatable situations.
One day while surfing random YouTube videos, I came across the I-want-it-that-way cold open and decided to watch the show. That cold open alone deserves an Emmy. You should also check it out. It is available on you tube.
One of the best things about the show is the absence of the traditional laugh track so that you can get to decide when to laugh.
This show is binge worthy. And even if the I-want-it-that-way cold open doesn't convince you to watch it, than I hope these reasons will.
1 ) Diversity
For an American sitcom, it feels really improbable for the cast to be this diverse but there are two latina women and two black men. Many characters represent different communities including different sexualities and class differences.
With notable cameos of great characters, the cast of the show is talented and gets along so well that you forget that they are not actually a family.
2 ) Relatable characters
Maybe you're a food connoisseur like Charles Boyle or maybe you're a social media icon like Gina Linetti or maybe you're a badass like Rosa Dias.
The characters are actually relatable and with so many different personalities you must actually resonate with at least one of them.
Are you organized (and possibly a little OCD?)like Amy Santiago? Or are you a great leader (and a bit too blank) like Captain Holt? Or maybe you're tough-on-the-outside, softie-on-the-inside Sargent Jeffords?
3 ) Social issues
Many great sitcoms that are almost loved by everyone do not focus on any other topic but comedy. But B99 handles many social issues very delicately such as racism, sexism, corruption, police brutality, nepotism and so forth.
Many episodes are based upon these problems and manage to nicely carry off the entire issue without getting too emotional or disturbing.
Moreover since all of the squad consists mainly of detectives and cops, each episode also includes some cases which help the story to keep going. Some of the episodes actually make you feel like you're watching a mystery reality show instead of a sitcom. Who could've thought crime solving could be this fun?
4 ) Character development
The character development in this show just slaps. From being irresponsible and immature, Jake Peralta learns to bear responsibility and be more mature while also simultaneously embracing his inner child.
Captain Raymond Holt learns that it's ok to be a bit childish sometimes and it's okay to have some fun once in a while. Charles finally gets to have a family and Rosa accepts herself as she is.
(Gina stays the same, that is the human form of 100th emoji).
The frienship betweem Jake and Charles and the relationship between Holt and Jake becomes more wholesome and warm as the show progresses. Initially Holt and Peralta are at war but in the later seasons they form an actually father-son bond that can make you envious.
Jake and Amy share a classic enemies to lovers tale and all the episodes featuring Peraltiago are elite.
5 ) The Comedy
From the witty one liners to the hilarious cold opens, the main reason to watch the show is definitely the comedy.
Holt's serious yet witty comebacks and Jake's childish yet somehow relatable comical moments actually carry the show. Other notable comedic epitomes include the paris of people Gina Linetti, Jake's best friend ever Charles Boyle ,the pontiac bandit Doug Judy (a.k.a Jake's best friend) and cheddar, Captain Holt's corgi.
Each season has a kind of pattern which always includes A Halloween Heist( all must watchs), some Peraltiago episode (chef's kiss), One with Doug Judy, and of course several with Adrian Pimento.
So if you haven't watched it go watch it, this will be so noice.
And if you have watched it, than cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, no doubt, no doubt, no doubt but y'all need to rewatch it because there's a chance that your life is turning a bit uh boring.
