When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There’s only one problem—she’s not married. She’s never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and the photos on her phone, they’ve been together for years.
As Lauren tries to puzzle out how
she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting, Michael goes to the
attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new man
emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that
her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the
question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know
you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start
actually living?
{Goodreads} SPOILERS ALERT
For a book that I so eagerly anticipated,
Holly Gramazio sure disappointed me. the plot is really unique and the story
seems so exciting but the book lacks the quality of adhering the readers to
itself. Lauren goes through a hundred and fifty husbands by the middle of the
book, some she rejects on really meagre problems such as chewing with their
mouth open, wearing shoes with separate toes or playing the clarinet. Others she
denies because they are secretly a criminal or they figure out something is
wrong with her. One she actually likes goes into the attic accidently and is
lost forever. But finally, she finds a husband who is going through something
similar. He goes into the attic and emerges through someone’s wardrobe as
husband of said someone or someone’s shed as the father of the family. Maybe they
should’ve ended together but they don’t and ultimately one day Lauren burns her
house down deciding that this new husband is what it is. She’s not gonna change
anything.
See the story seems actually
interesting. And the cover is also quite pretty. And these two are the reasons I
wasted my money on hardback instead of just reading the ebook. But to be honest
I actually liked the ending. It seemed bitter sweet. She ultimately sets fire to
her own house, accepting her husband, whatever he turns out to be. A bit sad also because in a world
where she could have infinite number of husbands, she still couldn’t find a
perfect guy. she will learn to embrace his flaws instead of just asking him to
check what’s in the attic.
